Louisiana Superdome and Exhibition District Hurricane Repairs

Superdome Game Day 2007
In early 2006, Broadmoor was selected to provide comprehensive construction management services for one of the most noteworthy structures in New Orleans’ damaged, post-Hurricane Katrina skyline: the Louisiana Superdome. The project represented some of the City’s greatest failures in Hurricane Katrina’s wake, but also the greatest hope in the rebuilding of the City as well.

The work was divided into two phases. The first phase of the project was for "Repairs” necessary to make the Superdome "football-ready” for the planned season opener of the New Orleans Saints’ first home football game of the 2006 NFL Season. The contract for this work was officially released in March 2006. It included $1 million in liquidated damages per football game missed due to any construction delays. The second phase of the contract, for "Enhancements” to the Superdome, was then performed later into 2007.

The Louisiana Superdome, prominently located in downtown New Orleans, is a 1.9 million square foot facility, of steel and concrete construction, designed to accommodate an audience of more than 72,000 people for events ranging from sports, concerts, stage productions, trade shows, exhibitions and more.

In summary, the scope of work for this project included repairs to the site, utilities, signage, concrete parking garage, architectural woodwork, fireproofing, glazing, acoustical ceiling panels, food service equipment, scoreboards, stadium seating, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and much more. The Phase I completion date, September 8, 2006, was triumphantly met by the Broadmoor team, placing the building into commerce in time for the City’s celebratory win over the Atlanta Falcons – an important accomplishment not only for Broadmoor but for the entire community.

The project was awarded the ABC Bayou Chapter Award for Mega Projects in 2006 and the Certificate of Commendation by the National Associated Builders and Contractors that year, as well as the Best Hurricane Reconstruction Project for Buildings in 2006 by South Central Construction Magazine.
