Eskew+Dumez+Ripple Architects Lunch & Learn at Broadmoor - Monday, August 15, 2016

Broadmoor was treated with two true elites of the architectural profession in New Orleans, Jose Alvarez and Z. Smith, both principals of Eskew+Dumez+Ripple Architects. A lively presentation on sustainability by Z., also Director of Sustainability & Performance for EDR, and a discussion about diversity development in the architectural profession from Jose, a native of Venezuela.

Z. provided insight into his sustainability approach and thought processes that led to EDRís own evidence based design studies and real world accomplishments, offering the very rare "Net ZeroĒ building which they designed in British Columbia as an example of the real world possibilities. As a LEED Fellow, Zís passion about creating sustainability in energy, architectural, and environmental design is inspiring.

Jose Alvarez provided an interesting look at his own journey as a native of Venezuela to the top of the architectural field in New Orleans. As the President of the Louisiana Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects, he gave causal explanations of the lack of diversification in the architectural profession, and shared with us his active quest to broaden the cultural expanse in American architectural practice. By teaching at four high schools every week and hosting mentorship retreats to high school students and intern architects, NOMA has a charismatic ambassador in Jose, leading more diversity into the profession with his personal and professional experience and passion for architecture and New Orleans.
