George Washington Carver High School

Lost to Hurricane Katrina, the Upper Ninth Ward community now has its high school again. The new George Washington Carver High School was designed and constructed by Broadmoor under a design/build contract for the Louisiana Recovery School District.

The school consists of 189,849 square feet with a 55 foot eave height on the two story main school building. The academic wing includes 53 teaching spaces designed to accommodate a range of teaching approaches. The fully equipped classrooms include smart boards and individual computer stations served by campus-wide Wi-Fi and TV systems. Classrooms designed for instruction of students with individual needs are provided along with multiple science labs, an art classroom equipped with a kiln, and a culinary lab for educating students in nutrition principals and food preparation skills. All of the teaching spaces receive natural light and have views to the outside. Student gathering spaces include a 3,700 square media center, a multi-functional dining hall of 6,000 square feet, and an outdoor commons area for both casual and organized activities.

In addition to the school’s state-of-the art academic spaces and informal gathering locations, a detached Convocation Center (67,336 square feet) provides an expansive home for Carver’s sports, music, and theatrical events.

Carver High School was designed to meet LEED Silver certification. The Design-Build team utilized "BIM” implementation starting with design and extending all the way through MEP coordination. Broadmoor provided a final 3D model of the project to the owner for use in the future development of the campus.

The new campus represents the goals of the Recovery School District, and the academic importance of Carver High School to the neighborhood. Emphasis throughout focuses on providing an environment that supports and encourages both individual and collective achievement. The highly-anticipated educational facility welcomed back students for the Fall Semester of the 2016/2017 school year.
