How to Effectively Set Your Career Goals
The path to an ultimate career goal is not always clear or set in stone. No matter the situation, the best way down this path is to have a plan and efficient goal setting to see you to your desired outcome.

Abandon Concern of Failure
You are paving your own way to success. Remind yourself of your capabilities, and keep in mind that all opportunities are a learning experience. Should something not work in your favor, treat it as a lesson and grow from it.

Set Your Path
Inform yourself of the skills and education required for your profession. Ask yourself questions about what you want and how to obtain your goal, and then do your research in order to establish the steps needed for your career.

Outline
Whether it be an outline, a written document, a list, a chart, a map, etc., a visual of your plan is essential when setting your goals. Organize your ideas and plans into a form that you will understand best and be comfortable using during your planning process.

Set Short-Term Goals within Your Long-Term Goals
Setting short-term goals gives you clear, defined steps that offer direction and purpose. They provide a thorough understanding of how you will reach your ultimate goal. Striving to attain smaller goals grants more satisfaction and encouragement as it allows you to see your own progress and gives you a well-deserved sense of achievement.

Be Realistic
It is important to note that one might not always know how realistic a career goal might be until he or she tries to obtain it. Before you start to feel discouraged for not achieving your goal within your time frame, take into account that your workplace expectations may not be as realistic as previously determined. Understand your strengths, your weaknesses, your capabilities overall, and reevaluate your plan if necessary when setting these goals.

Time Management
This step goes hand-in-hand with setting realistic expectations. Once you have a better understanding of your goals and when you can achieve them, time management must come into play.

"I don't have time" is a rather commonly heard excuse, and what one should really ask is, "Do I not have time, or am I not making time?" Integrate a schedule into your plan, especially into your short-term goals to better understand when and how you can achieve each step.

Continuously Organize and Update Your Goals

As stated earlier, career paths are not always set in stone. Change can occur and it is important to be prepared for alternatives, whether they are your own doing or caused by your work environment. Staying on top of your plan and schedule allows for an easier adjustment to change.

Organization, open-mindedness, and a positive attitude are key in paving your career path. Not all changes can be expected, but preparing for them will ease the process and keep you motivated. Effectively planning your goals proves not only to yourself your capabilities, but to the working world as well, which will see you to the end of your path that you have worked hard to establish.
